15 Genealogy Blogs You Need to Read!
Leslie Albrecht Huber looks at the top family history blogs on the 'net.

As with nearly any subject now, blogs on genealogy topics abound. There are hundreds of them — more than any one person could possibly read. Some seek to cover everything genealogy, while others focus on certain aspects of genealogy, such as technology, news or specific types of research — Canadian, New England etc. Some are written by genealogy professionals or by companies promoting their products. Others are written by hobbyists tracing their own families.
These genealogy blogs can offer helpful information, making you aware of new products, indexes, and websites, or simply sources you didn’t know about before. Others can just be fun to read. But since you can’t read all of them, which should you read? Well, the answer depends on where your interests lie and what you hope to gain from a blog.
In this article, I’ve included some great genealogy blogs with short descriptions to help you filter through which might be useful (or fun) for you to follow.
1. Eastman’s Online Genealogy Newsletter
www.eogn.com
by Dick Eastman
“The daily newsletter for genealogy consumers…”
Many genealogists who only read one blog, read this one. Much of the content is free, but you can sign up to receive additional information in the “Plus edition”. If you want to stay current on what’s new in genealogy from products to conferences to newly available sources, you’ll want to check Dick’s blog often. He promises “straight talk” and that’s what you’ll get. Dick usually steers clear of personal stories, but delivers information-packed posts.
2. About.com:Genealogy
http://genealogy.about.com
by Kimberly Powell
The amount of information available here can make your head spin. In a recent ranking, Kimberly’s blog came in at #1 for the most popular genealogy blog. And, it’s no wonder. She has news, reviews, and many other things found at other blogs. But, she also has an amazing amount of how-to articles on everything from German genealogy to finding online family trees, with each article linked to at least a dozen more. If you haven’t visited this blog yet, set aside some time to check it out. A few minutes just isn’t enough to even scratch the surface.
3. Dear Myrtle, Your Friend in Genealogy
www.dearmyrtle.com
by Pat Richley
“Practical, down-to-earth advice for family historians since 1995…”
In this blog, you’ll find a lot of news items, including new releases from the largest genealogy suppliers and companies out there. She also posts how-to articles on a range of subjects. From the blog, you can access posts dating back over a decade, as well as her online podcast and lessons on everything from government records to interviewing relatives.
4. Creative Gene
http://creativegene.blogspot.com
by Jasia
This blog carves out a little different space for itself than the “traditional” genealogy blogs. It has a solid genealogy base, with a little Polish bias (where Jasia’s own family comes from), but doesn’t stop with just genealogy. You’ll also find social history, a creative look inside our ancestor’s lives, as well as personal family memories and insights...
